About the Ravenna Police Department

The Ravenna City Police Department proudly serves the 11,500+ citizens of the City of Ravenna, with a staff of 27 sworn Law Enforcement Officers and 11 Communications Officers. The department is equipped with a state of the art computer aided dispatch system, mobile data terminals, enhanced 911, and other advanced technology to better serve its citizens. Our officers answer over 20,000 calls for service each year ranging from public assists such as vehicle lockouts to more serious criminal offenses such as assaults, burglaries and robberies. In case of more serious tactical incidents, the department belongs to Metro Swat which is a multi-jurisdictional agency that further enhances our response capabilities. The department works with a Federal Task Force through the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency), which investigates illegal drug activity in Ravenna and throughout the county.

A Message from the Chief

Our department works every day to protect and serve the people of Ravenna with professionalism, fairness, and respect.  We focus on preventing crime, addressing concerns quickly, and creating a safe environment for everyone who lives, works, or visits our city.

Strong connections with our community are the heart of what we do.  Through open communication, problem-solving, and a commitment to community policing, we aim to build trust and work side-by-side with our residents.  If you have a question, concern, or idea, we want to hear from you.

As Chief of Police, serving Ravenna is more than just a job – it’s personal.  I was born and raised here.  I take great pride in leading the dedicated men and women of the Ravenna Police Department, and I am fully committed to supporting them and the citizens we are honored to protect.

Sincerely,
Jake Smallfield
Chief of Police

Today, we pause to honor the lives lost on September 11th, 2001.
We remember the nearly 3,000 innocent souls, the brave first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice, and the countless families forever changed.

As a Police Department, we stand United in remembrance of those who ran toward danger when others ran away. Their courage and selflessness will never be forgotten.

We remember. We honor. We’ll never forget.

🚲 E-BIKE RULES 🚲

E-Bikes are becoming really popular in Ravenna - and we know a lot of kids are riding them to school, to friends’ houses, or just for fun. They’re a great way to get around, but remember, e-bikes are still vehicles, and Ohio law has rules for how and where they can be used. Please see the links below for more information.

Here is information on scooters pulled directly from ORC: "A low-speed micromobility device may be operated on the public streets, highways, sidewalks, and shared-use paths, and may be operated on any portions of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles in accordance with this section". codes.ohio.gov/ohio-revised-code/section-4511.514

I remember when I was a kid many years ago you could take your bike to the police station and get a license plate for it.

So what happens when they hit a car. Since there’s no requirement for them to be registered or insured. Is the vehicle owner supposed to pay for the damages themselves?

I have an electric scooter that's pretty fast, but i still obey the laws. The most violations see is running stop signs, stop lights or being on a sidewalk in downtown and its a mix of kids and adults.

Where do electric scooters fall in these classifications? Around town I see 10 electric scooters to every 1 e-bike.

You’ll never catch me coppers!

This definitely needed addressed.

Electric scooters are far more dangerous yet there's no mention of them. How are these allowed on busy roadways?? Electric scooters (usually seen piloted by children) traveling at 5-10 mph in a posted 25-35mph zones have no business mingling in traffic with semis, pickup trucks, and other civilian traffic. An extremely small red light that's about an inch from the road cannot constitute as a tail light ever...day or night.

Foolish to ride any bike at any age without a helmet!! That being said ride your bike!!!

Thank you.
