About the Ravenna Police Department

The Ravenna City Police Department proudly serves the 11,500+ citizens of the City of Ravenna, with a staff of 27 sworn Law Enforcement Officers and 11 Communications Officers. The department is equipped with a state of the art computer aided dispatch system, mobile data terminals, enhanced 911, and other advanced technology to better serve its citizens. Our officers answer over 20,000 calls for service each year ranging from public assists such as vehicle lockouts to more serious criminal offenses such as assaults, burglaries and robberies. In case of more serious tactical incidents, the department belongs to Metro Swat which is a multi-jurisdictional agency that further enhances our response capabilities. The department works with a Federal Task Force through the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency), which investigates illegal drug activity in Ravenna and throughout the county.

A Message from the Chief

As Chief of Police, serving Ravenna is more than just a job – it’s personal.Β  I was born and raised here.Β  I take great pride in leading the dedicated men and women of the Ravenna Police Department, and I am fully committed to supporting them and the citizens we are honored to protect.

On January 31, 1981, Patrolman James Wert of the Ravenna Police Department was killed in the line of duty by an intoxicated driver.

Today marks the 45th anniversary of his passing. Last year, his service and sacrifice were permanently honored with the dedication of a portion of State Route 88 as the β€œPatrolman James R. Wert Memorial Highway,” following the passage of Ohio House Bill 251.

We pause today to remember Ptl. Wert, honor his legacy, and reflect on his unwavering commitment to the Ravenna community.
Thank you for your service, Ptl. James Wert. You will never be forgotten.

I remember like it was yesterday. One of the worse days in my career. Jim was a good friend and I think of him always. NEVER forget .

😒Jim’s family and mine grew up in the same neighborhood in Windham. His Dad was my high school principal. They were a wonderful family. My thoughts are with them on this sad anniversary. πŸ™

I remember that terrible time and the intense grieving throughout Ohio police departments and even recognition from other states.

I am always curious about the punishment of the inebriated driver. Are they still incarcerated?

I played football against him , typical Windham Garrettsville rivalry, I remember our last game walking off the field talking to him like an old friend, I was shocked and saddened to hear of his passing on the radio.

I remember Jim and how his death hurt his family, especially his mom and his wife.

That's awsome. He was a good guy for sure .gone to soon. Just like my cousin Ravenna police officer William Cooper. He did not die in the line of duty. But because of Doug Peters. They were duck hunting at west branch and they took turns shooting. Peter's shot out of turn capsizieing them Cooper got caught on some brush and drowned.

I remember πŸ’”

He was an awesome young man!

Never forgotten… πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»

Tow time

It would be nice if it was actually enforced. My neighbor's and people all down my street are parked on the road
