About the Ravenna Police Department

The Ravenna City Police Department proudly serves the 11,500+ citizens of the City of Ravenna, with a staff of 27 sworn Law Enforcement Officers and 11 Communications Officers. The department is equipped with a state of the art computer aided dispatch system, mobile data terminals, enhanced 911, and other advanced technology to better serve its citizens. Our officers answer over 20,000 calls for service each year ranging from public assists such as vehicle lockouts to more serious criminal offenses such as assaults, burglaries and robberies. In case of more serious tactical incidents, the department belongs to Metro Swat which is a multi-jurisdictional agency that further enhances our response capabilities. The department works with a Federal Task Force through the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency), which investigates illegal drug activity in Ravenna and throughout the county.

A Message from the Chief

Our department works every day to protect and serve the people of Ravenna with professionalism, fairness, and respect.  We focus on preventing crime, addressing concerns quickly, and creating a safe environment for everyone who lives, works, or visits our city.

Strong connections with our community are the heart of what we do.  Through open communication, problem-solving, and a commitment to community policing, we aim to build trust and work side-by-side with our residents.  If you have a question, concern, or idea, we want to hear from you.

As Chief of Police, serving Ravenna is more than just a job – it’s personal.  I was born and raised here.  I take great pride in leading the dedicated men and women of the Ravenna Police Department, and I am fully committed to supporting them and the citizens we are honored to protect.

Sincerely,
Jake Smallfield
Chief of Police

🎄 Shop with Ravenna Safety Forces 🎄

Today, the Ravenna Police Department proudly hosted our Shop with Ravenna Safety Forces event, bringing together Ravenna Police Officers alongside our partners from area Police Departments, Ravenna City Fire and Ravenna Township Fire to spend a meaningful morning with some incredible local children.

We kicked off the day at the Ravenna Elks Lodge with breakfast, making reindeer food, and—most importantly—getting to know one another. From there, we headed to Walmart, where each child was paired with a police officer or firefighter to shop for the holidays. This year, thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our community, we were also able to provide each participating family with $250 in grocery assistance, helping ease some added stress during the holiday season.

This event is not about recognition or a pat on the back. It’s about connection—building trust, creating positive memories, and strengthening the bond between our safety forces and the families we serve. Moments like these remind us that community is built one conversation, one shared laugh, and one act of kindness at a time.

None of this would be possible without the incredible local businesses and donors who continually support our community. Your generosity directly impacts local families, and we are truly grateful.

❤️ Thank you for helping make Ravenna a community built on care, compassion, and connection. Special acknowledgement to Parker Hannifin volunteers for wrapping all those presents!

Fatal Pedestrian–Train Accident Under Investigation

If I’m not mistaken wasn’t there another incident this time of year at that same intersection about 3 years ago?

I go for walks at lunch and many times when I cross the tracks on Chestnut, I see someone wondering down the tracks. Active RR tracks are not hiking trails.

How does one not know a train is coming? U can not only hear it a ways away but u can feel it when it gets closer. I grew up with tracks in my backyard and there is no possible way that train could ever just "sneak up" on me. It had to have been someone drunk, deaf, or a self inflicted railroad track temperature challenge. I feel horrible for their family...

Train was still there around 7 last night, I feel for the family but also the engineer of the train.

That is so sad. Praying for the community. Everyday. I miss my hometown so much. If you are having any thoughts of harming yourself or others you can always message me. I may be away but I'm still here. Home is where the heart is. You can also dial 988 I believe. God bless.

With the way they design noise canceling ear buds and with the way people are glued to their phones anything is possible.

It's not the fault of the train there are warning signs, lights, gates.

Thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the victim… also praying for the conductor who was driving the train… such a tragic incident.. 😢🙏🏻

Soooo sad .. prayers to all the involved and the family 🙏

Prayers of comfort to his family. 🙏🏼🫂

My thoughts and prayers go out to all involved.

Sending love and prayers 🙏❤️ Out to the Family

Prayers for the family.

God speed to the lost life. Thoughts and hope for the Conductor and first responders.

Prayers for everyone 🙏🙏

Prayers for their families involved. Prayers for the conductor. That sucks.

This is incredibly sad. My deepest heartfelt condolences to the family. Godspeed young life

Prayers for the family of the one involved and prayers for the conductor

So sad for the families.

Sending prayers to all the family and all involved

Praying

So sad. So sorry to hear this

Thoughts and prayers are with the family ❤️

I don't understand why people keep walking on train tracks.

So sad sending prayers. I had to do a detour due to it being stopped.
